Lee Roy Abernathy was a Christian gospel singer songwriter from Cartersville, GA

Lee Roy Abernathy

Lee Roy Abernathy was a Christian gospel singer songwriter from Cartersville, GA. He sang with The Rangers, Homeland Harmony, Miracle Men, and the Happy Two with Shorty Bradford. He wrote “He’s A Personal Savior”, “A Newborn Feeling”, “I Thank My Savior for It All”, but his signature song was “Everybody’s Going to Have a Wonderful Time Up There”. The song was later known as the “Gospel Boogie” and was recorded by numerous music artists including Johnny Cash and Pat Boone and a staple song at southern gospel concerts. 


Abernathy was inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1973. In 1989 he received the Mary Tallent Pioneer Award from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon. In 1996 he became one of the (posthumous) charter inductees in the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame, in Sevierville, Tennessee.

Casting Crowns

Casting Crowns are a Christian contemporary gospel group in Stockbridge, GA. Mark Miller (Beachstreet Records) took the group into the studio along with co-producer Steven Curtis Chapman, himself a popular artist on the CCM musical scene. The resulting eponymous album, Casting Crowns, was released in 2003 on the Beach Street imprint. The album quickly made them one of the fastest selling debut artists in Christian music history. The album's third single, "Voice of Truth", spent a record-breaking fourteen consecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in 2003. "Voice of Truth" is also used in the trailer and the ending from the movie Facing the Giants. The album was certified platinum in 2005, and in 2011, the group received their first gold certification for a single for the song 'Who Am I' from their debut record.

Matilda Durham, aka "Miss M. T. Durham" and "M. Durham", from Cobb County, GA was a music teacher, composer and songwriter. She is most known for penning the Christian hymnal "Promised Land", first published in 1885, becoming a popular congregational hymn. She also wrote  other popular hymns, "On Jordan's Stormy Banks", "Heavenly Treasure", and "Star of Columbia".

Gold City (Dahlonega, GA) is a Christian gospel quartet formed in 1980. The Mississippi-based Christianairs were renamed Gold City in Dahlonega, Georgia at midnight on New Year’s Eve, 1980, with bass Dallas Gilliland, tenor Bob Oliver, lead singer Jerry Ritchie, and baritone Ken Trussell. The group's owner was initially Floyd Beck, who sold the quartet to Tim Riley, Ivan Parker, Brian Free, and Garry Jones.

Amy Grant

Amy Grant is a singer, songwriter and musician from Augusta, GA. She started in contemporary Christian music (CCM) before a successful crossover to pop music in the 1980s and 1990s. She has been referred to as "The Queen of Christian Pop."

Hugh Jarrett

Hugh Jarrett, Atlanta, GA, was a singer who sang with the gospel group, The Jordanaires. The Jordanaires sang back up on many songs popular hit recordings by Elvis Preseley - "All Shook Up" and "One Night" and on gospel songs ("Peace In The Valley", "It Is No Secret"), the queasy "Old Shep" and Elvis' Christmas Album (1957), The soundtracks of Loving You (1957), Jailhouse Rock (1957) and King Creole (1958) and undertook many concert appearances as a member of The Jordanaires with Presley. Jarrett's last recording with him was "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" in February 1958. An in-demand session singer, Jarrett also sang with the likes of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, Dottie West, Eddie Arnold, Patsy Cline, and Wayne Newton.
